Marketing by Insulting Your Prospects?

Sometimes material is just handed to you.  Today, I got another email solicitation to help me with my internet marketing.  I’m going to post it without blurring out the names of the “innocent.”  It deserves to be shared in all its glory.

I’ve highlighted my favorite parts where this purveyor of website marketing for dentists starts off with unadulterated CONDESCENSION.  Really?  Are these the folks any of us want for marketing advice??

what-don't-you-understand3

Can you imagine speaking to your patients this way?

“If you haven’t set up your appointments for scaling and root planing, I’ve just got to ask…  What part of losing your teeth don’t you understand, Mrs. Smith?”

“What part of apical abscess don’t you understand, Mr. Johnson?”

Naaa… I don’t want to send my kids to Harvard, nor do I want a boat.

Yeah… Condescension…   THAT’S going to win them over!

Really, Jim?  I’ve just got to ask… What part of being nice and respectful to your prospects don’t you understand?

The Intricacies of Armed Self-Defense

I just came across this very interesting and excellent article about the legal maze of armed self-defense:

Hot Bullets, Cold Truth – How to prepare for the investigators, lawyers, revenge seekers and media hounds after shooting an attacker in self-defense <—Link (read it!)

Home defense transparent bkgdIf you’ve committed yourself to be accountable for your own safety and survival in a world where bad guys victimize good people, then I would recommend reading this article.  If you own a weapon intended to defend yourself and family at home or outside the home, you must commit to a number of things:

1.  Training and practice – You must be intimately familiar with how to operate your weapon and be proficient in its use.  Can you hit the target?  Do you know how to clear a malfunction?

2.  Knowing the law – Every state is different.  Continue reading

Content Is King – Gary Vee Said So!

Gary VeeFor a DOZEN years I’ve been preaching that “Content Is King” when it comes to online marketing.  And, now I’m hearing it from the real experts.  Gary Vaynerchuk is an online marketing sensation.  Dude’s a genius.  Really… he is.  I’ve been following him on and off for a few years.

Here are a couple of recent video missives about CONTENT by “Gary Vee”:  (videos after the jump)

Protect Your Intellectual Property Online

copyright lock

I’ve been marketing my practice online since 1999.  Over the years, I’ve put a LOT of time and effort into my website.  I created my entire practice website top to bottom.  Every photo and every word is my own original creation.  And, I’ve learned that many dentists have taken a liking to my work and seen fit to copy it for their own use.  This lack of scruples isn’t unique to dentists, of course.  But, that’s the world I live in.  And, this article will address the issue from a dental perspective.

Over the years, I’ve encountered countless cases of my work being stolen.  It has ranged from a single photo to my entire website.  That’s right… A dentist in California had a website that was a verbatim copy of my site with his own name substituted in all the right places.  It took multiple attempts (and threats) to get him to take it down.

If it’s illegal offline, it’s illegal online.

Know What Your SEO Is Doing!

SPAM!As this blog has become more popular, I am finding more and more spam comments.  Most of them are from purveyors of anything from shoes to male enhancement products.  Most of those get automatically filtered out by my spam plug-in.

This isn’t the first time I’ve written about this topic.

blog comment spamBut, some of them are from “dentists.”  The reality is that they aren’t really from the dentist, but rather they are submitted by whomever the dentist hired to do the SEO (search engine optimization) for his or her website.

The idea is to build “back-links” to the dentist’s website, increasing his “Google street cred.”  The more links that point to your site, the better for increasing your Google ranking…. to a degree.  Ideally, you want other high-ranking and highly-relevant sites linking to yours.  Continue reading

Will You Still See Me? Will You Still Drill Me… When You’re 64?

I just found out that a local colleague passed away a couple of weeks ago.

steveTheofelos A. “Steve” ALIAPOULIOS, D.D.S. was 86 years old when he passed away.  He saw patients until his last day on this Earth.  That’s a true Dental Warrior!

I knew Steve through our common participation in a local dental continuing education organization.  Though he was old enough to be my father (and even almost my grandfather), we just hit it off.  Steve was quite simply a “cool” guy.  I admired his passion for dentistry.  Here he was in his 80s, still seeing patients in private practice, AND he was still attending continuing education courses.  He still had an appetite to learn the latest and greatest in dentistry.  I’ve been a member at the Research Clinic for 22 years, and I’ve taken a lot of classes with Steve.  Steve had even taken classes I taught.

Steve ALWAYS had a smile on his face.  He loved to talk about dentistry.  He always wanted to know what I was up to.  Just this year, I was showing him my Dad’s reconstruction case, and he was fascinated and fully engaged.  I really enjoyed sharing ideas and cases with Steve.

Steve was very involved with the community through his church and Rotary Club.  I just learned that he had PERFECT ATTENDANCE to Rotary meetings for SIXTY YEARS.  He was an avid singer in Barbershop Quartet.  He was an active member of the local dental association for 59 years.  Amazing.

In the Research Clinic, Steve was always eager to treat patients, and I can tell you he still “had it.”  He still had the hands.  And, patients always loved him.

I often told Steve that I hope I will still have the same passion and desire when I reach his age.  I told him he was an inspiration.  He always laughed and shrugged.  But, I meant it.

I know a lot of YOUNG dentists who live counting down the days until retirement.  I can’t imagine going to the office every day, dreading it, and dreaming of when I can leave the profession.  I’ve long said that I have no specific plans to retire by a certain date or age.  I may reallocate my time to some degree.  I may take more vacations in the future.  But, I AM a dentist.  I love doing this.  I have no reason to ever quit.  And, if I can keep doing it with a smile on my face, like Steve…. then it will be a good life.

I’m really going to miss hanging out with Steve in the Research Clinic.  Rest in peace, my friend.

Shout Out for Brasseler

Mike's lab-For longer than I care to admit, my electric lab handpiece has not been working properly.  It wouldn’t grip my lab burs in the chuck firmly in the “locked” position, and the motor would spin while the bur would slip.  In a pinch, I can go to the office next door and use his lab.

Finally, today I called Brasseler to see about getting my handpiece repaired.   The operator transferred me to the service department.  I spoke with a nice gentleman (the name escapes me now) who listened to my description of the issue.  With a friendly southern drawl, he walked me through a VERY simple repair (tightening the chuck).  It worked a charm!  🙂  Burs are now gripped rock-solid!

lab handpiece-

I love my lab! The electric lab handpiece from Brasseler is a workhorse! I highly recommend it.

I’ve always been a Brasseler fan, and I still am.  They offer top-of-the-line products that have never disappointed me.

Don’t Show Them HOW We Make the Sausage!

There’s a saying:  “Everyone likes sausage, but nobody wants to see how it’s made.”

sausage-makingWe dentists are technically very highly-trained.  And, we love to show our talents off to our colleagues… and our patients.  The latter can be a mistake, in my opinion.  One of my dental school professors told me, “Dentists are the kind of people who, if you ask them for the time, they’ll tell you how to build a clock.”

We love to talk about the FEATURES of what we do and gloss over the BENEFITS.   Patients are interested in BENEFITS.  They don’t care how we do it!  They really, REALLY don’t!

Homemade traditional sausageOn so many dental websites, I see CLINICAL descriptions of dental procedures in excruciating detail.  The focus is on the HOW rather than the WHY.  We have to remember who are target audience is.

Besides the encyclopedic descriptions of how we do that voodoo that we do so well, many dentists mistakenly use clinical photos that would do well to grace the pages of a dental journal, but they have NO PLACE in marketing our services.  Just tell me what time it is!Today I was “ego-surfing” on Google to see how my website was doing for certain keywords.  And, I came across another local dentist’s website that I had to check out.  I’ve seen some photos on websites that made me cringe.  But, the real test is my wife’s reaction.  She’s not a dentist.  She’s a NORMAL person.  And, I think her reaction is a reasonable representation of what we could expect from a lot of laypeople.

Here’s what I found… and what made my wife turn away, exclaiming, “Geeez!”  Continue reading
