This is just a quick “what happened this week” post.
Earlier this week, I had a patient who is in a wheelchair. His neck had been broken in a chiropractor’s office. Ironically, he is a retired chiropractor. Really nice guy.
He breathes through a stoma in his neck. He cannot have any fluids go down his throat. He has an aide that stands by ready to suction him so he doesn’t choke. His aide told me she would sit facing him, so she could watch his facial expression. She’d know if she needed to jump in to help him breathe. Yay! 🙂
Fortunately, he was able to transfer to the dental chair.
The treatment plan: Replace a crown with recurrent decay on #31. Hoo-boy… should be interesting!
I introduced and explained how the Isolite might help make treatment easier and more expeditious. And, he agreed.
With the Isolite in place, I was able to section and remove the old crown, remove caries, build up with composite, and refine the preparation in a single, linear, and efficient effort. We didn’t stop once. His aide was impressed. So was he.
With the continuous suction of the Isolite, there were simply no issues. The integral LED light combined with my own headlight kept the entire operative field well-illuminated despite having to work on him in an upright position while I was standing. Unfortunately, the Isolite couldn’t help my back. 😉

Even better if combined with a CEREC…. you can take the pictures with the Isolite in place.
You convinced me…just got a quote from Isolite!
Cool, Sherman! It may seem a bit awkward at first. But, the key is presenting it in a positive light as to the PATIENT benefits. I explain that it’s a bit weird at first, but once it’s in place, the benefits will become quickly obvious. “None of that crud going down your throat. It continuously vacuums everything away. Your jaw won’t get tired staying open… you rest on this soft bite block. And, we’ll be able to get done much sooner than without it. Your appointment will be shorter.” And, so on.
I think it’s also important to get the staff onboard. Let them try it on themselves. Play with it a bit.
Once you get used to it, you’ll wonder how you’d work without it. I don’t use it on EVERY case… like a quick occlusal on an upper premolar, for example. But, it sure helps in many cases.
Be sure to read my first review, too. 🙂 https://thedentalwarrior.com/2011/01/14/win-the-isolation-battle-with-isolite/
Nice work! I wonder if you’ll get any referrals now. Standing up and working is tough.
